THE FITZ SHOPS FIELD NOTES

From a ZIP file to a saved result.

A practical guide to opening, editing and backing up the different files in Fitz Shops products.

The important distinction is between the source you edit and the result you share or print. Keep both. A PDF exported from a wedding-sign editor is useful for printing, but it may not retain that editor’s controls. A screenshot of a budget is a reference, not a workbook you can continue editing.

First, unpack the download

If the product arrives as a ZIP, save it to a folder you can find, then use your operating system’s extract or uncompress command. Work from the extracted folder. Opening a single file inside a compressed preview can leave its supporting files unavailable. Keep the original ZIP as a clean starting copy and read the included quick-start and license files before editing.

What each format is for

FormatUse it forWhat to preserve
PDFViewing and printing a fixed page layout. A PDF is editable only where the particular product provides that feature. The original page dimensions. A browser’s print scaling can change the physical result.
SVGVector artwork in a compatible design app. A browser can display SVG without offering design-editing controls. An editable source copy before exporting a raster image. Check fonts and any app-specific import differences.
PNG / JPEGImages for supported design and publishing workflows. PNG can retain transparent areas; JPEG uses a solid background. The original pixel dimensions. Enlarging the image does not recover missing detail.
PPTXPresentation layouts in a compatible presentation app.A copy with editable slide objects. Reopen an exported PDF separately to check the delivered appearance.
XLSXSpreadsheet calculations in a compatible spreadsheet app.A working copy of the original workbook. Edit the indicated input cells and avoid replacing formulas.
HTML + supporting filesA browser tool that runs from its downloaded folder. The whole folder and any exported data backup. Browser tabs and exported printouts do not replace a data backup.
JSON backupRestoring structured data into the matching tool. The unedited backup and its date. It is not a universal spreadsheet format.

Choose a save routine you can repeat

Use a folder such as Wedding signs / originals for the untouched download and Wedding signs / exports for print-ready copies. Give exports meaningful names such as table-03-proof.pdf. For household records, save a dated data backup after each session, then use the tool’s restore/import option to confirm the backup can be read.

Some products have manual export controls; others use the normal Save command in your editing app. Follow that product’s instructions. Do not assume that every browser tool has automatic cloud saving, that another device will have your changes, or that clearing browser data is harmless to an unfinished session.

If something opens incorrectly

  1. Identify the file. Check its full extension and choose the matching app instead of renaming it. Changing .png to .svg does not turn pixels into editable vector paths.
  2. Compare with an untouched copy. If the original works and your working copy does not, recover your last saved version before changing more settings.
  3. Try the product’s sample. If the sample also fails in your app, compatibility may be the problem. Different apps can substitute fonts or interpret imported elements differently.
  4. Record one reproducible example. Note the filename, app and step that fails. For a spreadsheet, use an invented example instead of sending private financial records.
